Sparkman & Stephens, Redman Whiteley Dixon, Marine Design & Consultancy and RMK Yachts are teaming up to build a new world-class 52 meter cruising ketch for an experienced yachtsman. Construction at RMK Yachts is to begin in the spring of 2006.
This new design, S&S Design No. 2725, is a blend of “Classic S&S” with its trademark sheer, graceful overhangs, traditional transom and teak trim and “Contemporary” with a raised pilothouse, large flybridge and clean superstructure lines. The hull and sail plan have been designed to maximize cruising enjoyment through performance in a wide range of conditions.Recognizing that large sailing yachts often spend considerable time under power when the wind is light or not from the right angle, Greg Matzat, S&S Chief Naval Architect explains: “In this project our goal has been to design a sailing yacht that will perform well in the broadest combinations of wind speed and angles, maximizing time sailing and enjoyment for the owner.”
Redman Whiteley Dixon of England has the charge of the interior design. The yacht will have a traditionally raised and fielded panel interior of teak and luxurious marble bathrooms. Without sacrifice to aesthetics, the interior is designed for sailing, with fiddles and hand holds throughout.
Project management for the owner is being overseen by Paul Johnson of Marine Design & Consultancy of England. Having recently completed MIRABELLA V, Mr. Johnson brings a wealth of experience with respect to large sailing yacht systems.
RMK Yachts is a new division of RMK Marine in Tuzla, Turkey. RMK has built several large expedition yachts including JASMIN, PRIVATE LIVES and CARESSA K. This new yacht, RMK Project No. 70, will be the yard’s largest yacht to date and its first sailing yacht. The yacht is to be built to the very highest quality, as found in European yards. For this project, RMK has built a new state-of-the-art shed and is upgrading its facilities. The yard has also brought aboard Adriaan van Korlaar from the Netherlands to manage the new RMK Yachts division.
